I don’t remember exactly to which one of these 3 race tracks our father brought us to see Stock Car races for the very first time but it was one of them. It could be a dirt track named Berthelet Speedway (advertised above), located in Berthierville, Québec, it could have been another dirt track located in St-Esprit, Québec, or it could have been a paved track located in St-Paul l’Hermite also in the province of Québec. I don’t know if one of my 3 younger brothers or my youngest sister would recall but I doubt it.
These 3 race tracks were located in an region of the province called Lanaudière, located North-East outside of Montréal. As our father came to take us from the place where we lived and had to bring us back the same evening he couldn’t afford to go to see Stock Car races too far from where we lived and these 3 tracks were not too far from our place, They were the best choices he could do. One of them had to schedcule a race on sunday because it was the day that dad is usually visiting us. Back then, I remember that we went several times to Berthierville to see the races. I don’t know if they changed their schedule for sundays, or maybe it rained several times on friday nights and the races were delayed to sundays.

I remember very well 2 identical race cars on the dirt track of Berthierville. They were both yellow and were car models of 1957 to 1960, were Chrysler corp products (Dodge, Plymouth or Chrysler). They were big cars with the pointed fins at the back. Today and since a long time I would know the exact model and year of the cars but at the time I didn’t know much car models. I was only 12 years old and my father was not a car collector, scale model collector or car picture collector or anything of the kind and he didn’t teach much about car models, even if he knew plenty of different models of cars and from which year they were. As I always have been a car lover from my childhood, with the time I developped a lot more knolledge about car models, year models and how to difference them. About these 2 yellow race cars, I would be so glad to find someone who would have a picture of them, instantly I would recognise the car and year model, for sure. One thing I know for a fact is that the 1956 Chrysler product cars were shorter even if they had already very pointed fins, a year before the pointed fins of the ’57 Chevy and Ford cars, so because the ’56 Chrysler products cars were shorter, for sure it was not a model of this particular year. These 2 yellow big cars were all the time together in the pit and if possible on the track and the 2 guys were close friends or brothers. A gentleman that I know was born in Berthierville and he told me that there is some good chances that these 2 guys were the Villeneuve Brothers (Gilles and Jacques) because Berthierville was their hometown. 1968 was a long time before they became known internationnaly.

I believe it was the opening of the 1968 season of this dirt track. There was a tanker truck spreading some black oil on the track and there was so much of this liquid that the track was all wet and almost pitch black. I remember so well seeing all these race cars stopped on the track after a warm-up and the guys wiping hard their windshields with rags.. All of them and these 2 yellow cars were stopped very close again, with their drivers cleaning their windshields.

The dirt track located in St-Esprit, we didn’t go often, maybe only once but for sure at least once. The race cars were mostly old 4 door cars all banged up and most of them looked like they were bought in some scrap yards. Most of them, if not all were street stock but had their front clip shortened and had tubbing bumpers and radiussed sheet metal around their wheels with the addition of the usual roll cage. They were low budget or very low budget race cars. The cars were slow, it was long between the races and the place seemed very desorganised.. It was also very dusty. There were clouds of dust all over. It is very possible that we did not happen to see their best evening. I hope for them that it was the case and that they experienced better moments sometimes because the evening that I do remember was a pitty. This race track did not probably last long cause I didn’t hear much of it after.
Sad that all these race tracks closed. Sad that many of them did not have the ressources to last. Sad that so many racers did not have the money to get good equipment and stay in competition.

About the track in St-Paul l’Hermite, I do remember of a race of a humdred laps of Late Model Sportsman in 1968 or 1969. The pilot Richard « Dick » Foley arrived with a car completely white, glossy, with a brand new paint, immaculate, there wasn’t any graphic on the car, not a single one, no number nor a single decal. She came out directly from the paint shop. That day he won the race and it was something really special to see this beauty, all white, really apart from all the other race cars. I am not sure but I think that our dad told us that usually, this car carried the number 88. Somebody could confirm this fact? Please contact me if so.

I remember that this race track was longer than the average short tracks and our dad told us that the racers did not like to run over there because the stretches were long and were hard for the engines of their race cars running in full acceleration a bit too long.. I remember very well having seen a blue ’64 Chevy with the inscription « Le Tigre » (The Tiger ) burning its engine on this track. The car stopped along the protection wall close to the spectators just in front of the stand, not far from the finish line and they didn’t stop the race.

I do remember also of a fashion in these days when we used to see cartoon characters on race cars. There was a car with an enormous Mickey Mouse on one side and a Astérix (French cartoon character) on the other side. Often we saw these kind of drawings on the lid at the back of the race cars. As a matter of fact we still see these cartoon characters on todays Vintage Stock Cars representing this era. This was a fashion of the time, and it disapeared with the some time after. Curious like a fashion appears and desapears as suddenly as it came.

Unfortunatly I didn’t have any camera at the time and could not take any picture.
