MISTER BEEP AND ME / MONSIEUR BEEP ET MOI

It was at the biginning of the ’60s. I was born in 1956 so at that time I was a low age kid, but my oldest brother was 7 years older than me. I remember when he gave me this toy that he had stored in my grandfather’s attic since a couple of years, and brought back to give it to me. I was amazed and fascinated by this beautiful toy. It was a bright yellow car with tailfins.  It’s name was MR. BEEP (Mister Beep). It was made of rigid plastic (styrene) molded in yellow, had a roof shaped as a black hat, cap style with a very short cap sunvisor. There were windows painted in some kind of a grey-beige color.

At the front of the car, instead of a regular grill and headligthts there was a smiling face drawn in black over the yellow plastic of the body. I remember that I found this toy absolutely beautiful and I was so happy to have it. The back of the car had a licence plate in the center of the trunk and it was written « MR. Beep » on it. There were 2 wheels at the front of the car, inside the edge of the fenders, as a regular car, but at the rear, the 2 wheels were far from the edge and closer from the center of the car with a very short axle in between them.. The car had 2 high tailfins.

For so many years, I had completely forgotten MR. Beep. I don’t even remember how it had disapeared from my life. It just vanished and it seems that I didn’t even noticed it, probably as suddenly as it appeared before my eyes the day when my brother gave it to me.

One day, years ago, I found in an old french edition of Readers Digest, from May 1960, an advertising of BP (British Petrolium) and there was this kind of black pencil drawing on a yellow background of my Mr. Beep. I collect vintage old magasines since many, many years, above all for the old advertisings. Seeing this drawing of Mr. Beep, suddenlybrought back memories very far back in my life, memories of this yellow car that I had. It was by the end of the ’70s or early ’80s that I remember finding this page in this old Readers Digest that I just had bought, maybe at the Salvation Army or some other store where they sell used material.

Years later, I think that is was around year 1999 or 2000, I met a guy who was selling his collection of cars and truck scale models and also some vintage toys. Suddenly my eyes stopped on this toy,  this Mr.Beep was there,  for sale. I jumped on it almost  as soon as I saw it, I guess, the time that I realised that I was not dreaming.  I bought it in a hurry. I don’t remember the price, I just took the money out of my wallet, paid him right away and grabbed the toy as happy as I was when I was a kid and received it from my brother. The Mister Beep of my childhood was now back in my life. His yellow plastic finish will have to be polished, and the gray and black paint schemes will have to be redone.

Lately, I contacted a seller of vintage toys that I know and sent him pictures of my Mr.Beep, and asked him if he would know the value of this toy. Surprisingly, he told me that he had one like that and was willing to sell it to me. He didn’t know the value but I made an offer and he sold it to me. Now I own 2 of these little sweet hearts. They are the only ones that I have seen since my childhood.

About Mr Beep / Au sujet de Mr. Beep

I don’t know if you knew but by the end of the ’50s, some people had built a real car Mr Beep for British Petroleum (Canada). The car has been found, in bad shape enough, but has been in restoration in the last years.

Here’s a website on this topic, where we can see pictures of the restoration and a good part of the history of this car:

I think that I have been the first blogger to install a post about Mr. Beep in 2009 on my site. At first I searched all over the net and didn’t find anything on the topic, not even another toy like mine. I looked sometimes on ebay and never happened to find one, but I didn’t look on a regular basis.
